The City of Petersburg traditionally presents
each fall a three day festival called the
Nostalgiafest. This year the economy has
resulted in a smaller, but equally exciting event.
The City will host the Family Fall Festival, a oneday
event to be held on Saturday, October 17th. It all
takes place in the heart of Old Towne Petersburg.
The kick off at 7 a.m. coincides with a Saturday
tradition in the Cockade City. That is the time the
Farmers’ Market opens. In fact the event takes place
at and around the market just east of the intersection
of Sycamore and Old Street.
Sonny Bevins and Friends will perform until
9 a.m. At that time the rest of the festival begins.
There will be musical acts all day. Exhibits will
be led by Virginia State Agricultural Department’s
renowned horticulture and aquaculture display.
Other educational events include an Art show,
historical walking tours, and programs of the
Petersburg Public Library.
Learning is great, but so is having fun. A putting
green will be provided by my favorite golf course
Dogwood Trace. At the Kid Zone kids of all ages
will enjoy rides, a petting zoo, an illusionist (magic
show) and an equilibrist (tight rope walking.)
There will be plenty of food including a Chili
Cook-off put on by local civic groups. Director of
Tourism Kevin Kirby’s assistant for organizing the
festival, Anne Thomas, states that the “The festival
is about everyone in Petersburg coming together in
a show of strength and cooperation.”
I’m ready to cooperate by circling October 17th
as a day to be in Petersburg. Admittance is free and
the event will be held rain or shine. The festival
ends at 6:30, but I’m sure a lot of people will be
staying to enjoy a great meal or other activity in
Petersburg’s, on the move, downtown area.
