DID YOU KNOW?
Every 71 seconds, someone in America develops Alzheimer’s disease; by mid-century someone will develop Alzheimer’s every 33 seconds.
In 2007, there were nearly 10 million Americans age 18 and over providing 8.4 billion hours of unpaid care to people with Alzheimer’s disease valued at $89 billion, four times more than what Medicaid pays for nursing home care for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
There are 1 to 1.4 million “long-distance caregivers” in the United States. About 1 million live more than two hours or more away and another 400,000 live at least an hour away from their loved ones. Many of these long-distance caregivers also incur higher caregiving-related expenses compared to other caregivers.
To respond to the ever-increasing need for Alzheimer’s and dementia care, one local assisted living community has recently expanded its facilities. Dunlop House, which opened in Colonial Heights in 1999, has enlarged its Magnolia Center and added eight additional two-bedroom assisted living apartments.
“The Magnolia Center,” explains Toy Newcomb, Director of Marketing and Admissions at Dunlop House, “offers a secure environment with a dedicated Nursing and Activities staff specializing in Alzheimer’s and Dementia care. The design of the expansion will allow Dunlop House to further enhance the specialized care services already provided.”
“Most importantly,” Newcomb emphasizes, “our experience makes the difference. Team members from every department are trained in many areas to include dementia care.”
“Making a move can a be a challenging process for anyone,” Newcomb says, “but the added requirements associated with making a move to assisted living can be more than frustrating. Our goal is to simplify the moving process for the future resident and his or her family by facilitating the application process from beginning to end.”
“Dunlop House has grown,” Newcomb says, “to become the elite assisted living in this area by providing quality care. The highest compliment we can receive is when a family member or resident trusts The Dunlop House Team to care for someone they know. Dunlop House is fortunate to be part of such a gracious community.”
