In Search Of: Local Favorites

Local FavoriteBy Chuck Koutnik
What’s your favorite restaurant? Our writer, Chuck Koutnik, put that question to some of the region’s more well known residents and natives. Here are his findings. If you’d like to tell us about your favorite restaurant and your favorite dish there, drop us a line. Email us at info@advertisingconceptsinc.com.

Chen’s Chinese Restaurant
13104 Kingston Ave. | Rt. 10 just west of I-295 | 804-530-8868

According to Tong Zheng the Kung Pao Shrimp is a rather spicy entrée with vegetables. Diners may choose a milder sauce.
When Kathy Easterling visits her hometown of Hopewell, she heads off with her mother and sister to Chen’s. This fine Chinese establishment is about three miles west on State Route 10. Kathy knows a thing or two about good cuisine from living in Los Angeles. She also just happens to have won three Emmys as a writer for the hit show Jeopardy!
Under the category of “Favorite Dishes” the answer reads, “Kung Pao Shrimp.” The correct question: “What is Kathy’s favorite dish at Chen’s?” Player one, you have control of the menu.

Andrades International Restaurant
7 Bollingbrook St. | Downtown Petersburg | 804-733-1515

Popular Garrison Commander, General Gwen Bingham, has just been reassigned to a new post at Fort Lee as General Campbell’s Chief of Staff. There will be no reassigning of the General’s favorite restaurant. Andrades International Restaurant in Downtown Petersburg will continue to take orders from the General for any one of their shrimp dishes. The chef of this popular mess hall earns a “well done” and “carry on” for the excellent sauce.
Cuisine from Mexico, Bolivia, Spain, and Peru. Maria Flores described two of the featured Shrimp Dishes:1. Carones Brochette. A Mediterranean dish of broiled (to keep in the flavor) shrimp stuffed with cheese, bacon, and jalapeño. The sauce is on the mild side of spicy.
2. Zarzuela de Mariscos. A recipe from Spain with shrimp with scallops, squid, mussels, and clams all in a sherry wine sauce.

The Home Place Restaurant
14712 Spring Creek Road | (Follow U.S. 1 South from Dinwiddie C.H. Watch for the sign to turn left) | 804-469-9596

The charming Town of Carson is the home of John Clements, Chairman of the Board for The Bank of Southside Virginia. John contributes much time and energy to Carson. The train station converted to a public library and the renovated caboose, now serving as a local railroad museum, are in large part the result of Mr. Clements hard work. He also finds time to serve on the Board of the Cameron Foundation.
John has a regular table at the Home Place Restaurant located just south of Dinwiddie Courthouse. At first glance you may feel like you’ve landed in heaven. The Home Place is set on a picturesque lake. The beautiful grounds were once the property of General Winfield Scott. Mr. Clements favorite dish is Fried Catfish with Stewed Tomatoes and Black-eyed Peas.
Home cooked food in a beautiful setting.

Alexander’s Fine Food
101 W. Bank Street | Downtown Petersburg | 804-733-7134

You will not find a more “down home” and generous philanthropist than Edward Titmus. For years the Titmus Foundation has been providing funds to local nonprofit organizations. His favorite restaurant, edging out Giuseppe’s and a few others, is Alexander’s on Bank Street in Petersburg. Edward names several dishes as favorites, but settles on the crab cakes for the most profitable dining experience.
Greek, Italian, and American Cuisine “since 1978.” Owner Spiros Georgogianis uses his own special recipe of spices and herbs for the crab cakes. This creates a more mild taste as opposed to usual base ingredients.
